It is directly tied to health, safety, and dignity. When a furnace fails in winter, an air conditioner goes down during extreme heat, or a plumbing issue threatens the habitability of a home, the situation can quickly become urgent. What many veterans and their families do not realize is that help may already exist through their local Veterans Service Commission (VSC).

Veterans Service Commissions

Veterans Service Commissions are county-based organizations created to support veterans and their dependents during times of hardship. In Ohio, they operate under Title 59 of the Ohio Revised Code, but each county administers its own programs. That distinction matters because not every county offers the same services or funding levels. The most important step a veteran can take is to visit their own county’s VSC and ask what help is available.

VSCs are intentionally structured to meet local needs. Some counties may offer emergency financial assistance for HVAC or plumbing repairs or replacements. Others may provide partial assistance, referrals, or alternative solutions. The only way to know what your county offers is to ask.

If a veteran is not eligible for a specific program, VSC staff do not simply turn them away. They explain why, outline what steps might make them eligible, and often help identify other avenues of assistance. As one VSC professional shared, “Like most military situations, there are a million ways to get to the same destination.”

How a VSC Can Help

Veterans Service Commissions may provide emergency financial assistance when a home issue affects health, safety, or basic livability. HVAC and plumbing problems often qualify, especially when weather conditions, medical needs, or sanitation concerns are involved. The urgency of the situation matters. In some cases, once documentation is provided, decisions can be made within 24 hours, depending on the county and circumstances.

While requirements vary, veterans can generally expect a walk-in visit or scheduled appointment, a meeting with the financial assistance team, and submission of required documentation. Commonly requested documents include proof of military service, such as a DD-214, proof of county residency, proof of financial hardship, and three local estimates for the HVAC or plumbing work.

What If I’m Not Eligible?

Being told “not eligible” should not end the conversation. VSC staff typically explain the reason, identify next steps toward eligibility, and provide referrals to other programs. Veterans may also find support through organizations such as the DAV, American Legion, VFW, and AMVETS.

As an HVAC comfort consultant, I often work with military veterans and am frequently asked whether I offer a veteran discount. I do — 10 percent. But there are far more impactful resources available than a contractor discount alone, and many veterans hesitate to pursue them. These resources exist because veterans did something that less than one percent of the American population was willing to do — serve.

This topic is personal. My brother is a retired Army Master Sergeant, and both my father and grandfather served in the United States Air Force. Veterans Service Commissions exist to support success — not judgment.

Beyond crisis assistance, many VSCs offer long-term support such as financial literacy education, job search and placement assistance, benefits counseling, and guidance on pensions and disability benefits.

If you or someone you know is facing an HVAC or plumbing emergency — or simply needs guidance — visit your county Veterans Service Commission. Ask questions. Bring documentation. Don’t self-disqualify.

Contact Crown Group Ohio today with any questions or to make an appointment with Caylen, our Comfort Consultant!

What many veterans and their families do not realize is that help may already exist through their local Veterans Service Commission (VSC).

[71
48,231
post-1752","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-community-involvement","tag-hvac","tag-hvac-support
["GET
